What are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews, AIO, SGE

Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of some Google search results, with links to the pages they draw on. Google rolled them out in the US in May 2024, replacing the Search Generative Experience test. Being cited in an AI Overview now matters as much as ranking in the results below it.

  • AI Overviews are Gemini-powered summaries shown above Google's regular results for some queries.

  • Each Overview links to source pages, so being cited is the new form of ranking.

  • Clicks from AI Overviews appear as normal organic traffic in analytics.

How Google AI Overviews work

Google AI Overviews work by combining Google's search index with a Gemini model that writes a short summary for the query. Google decides per query whether to show an Overview. They appear most often for informational and comparison questions and less often for simple navigation searches.

When an Overview appears, Google retrieves relevant pages, writes an answer, and attaches links to the sources it used. Google has described a technique often called query fan-out, where a question is split into related sub-queries so the summary can cover several angles. As a result, the cited pages are not always the ones that rank first for the original query. A page that answers one narrow sub-question well can be cited even if it ranks lower in the classic results.

Google AI Overviews vs AI Mode

Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode both use Gemini and Google's index, but they serve different moments. AI Overviews appear inside regular search results as a summary above the links. AI Mode is a separate, chat-style experience where users ask longer questions and follow-ups, and the AI answer is the main content of the page.

  • Trigger: Overviews show automatically for some queries. AI Mode is chosen by the user.

  • Length: Overviews are short. AI Mode answers are longer and conversational.

  • Sources: both cite links, but AI Mode often draws on a wider set of pages.

Because the two can cite different sources for similar questions, brands should track them separately rather than assume visibility in one carries over to the other.

How to get cited in Google AI Overviews

Getting cited in Google AI Overviews starts with being indexed and ranking reasonably well, then making your content the easiest to quote. Practical steps:

  1. Cover sub-questions: answer the follow-up questions around a topic, not only the main query.

  2. Answer first: put a direct, self-contained answer at the top of each section.

  3. Be specific: include concrete facts, steps and comparisons that a summary can use.

  4. Keep pages fresh: update facts, prices and dates so the content stays reliable.

  5. Strengthen trust: clear authorship, sources and coverage on other sites support E-E-A-T.

Track citations at the query level. For example, if you rank third for a query but are never cited in its Overview, compare your page with the pages that are cited to see what they answer that you do not.

How KIME tracks Google AI Overviews

KIME tracks Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode as separate engines, alongside eight others, by country and language. For each prompt you see whether an Overview mentions your brand, where you appear in it, and which domains it cites. Comparing that with your rankings shows where you rank but are not cited. Set up AI Overviews tracking in Track & Analyze.

Frequently asked questions

Can I opt my website out of Google AI Overviews?

Google does not offer a separate switch to exclude a site from AI Overviews while staying in regular search. Snippet controls such as nosnippet or max-snippet limit how much text Google can show, which also limits use in Overviews, but they can reduce how your listing appears in normal results too. Most brands aim to be cited instead.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to websites?

AI Overviews can reduce clicks for some queries, because the summary answers the question directly on the results page. The effect varies by query type: simple factual questions lose more clicks than complex purchase research. Pages cited inside the Overview can still earn visits, so being one of the linked sources is the best way to keep traffic.

What was Google SGE and how does it relate to AI Overviews?

Google SGE, short for Search Generative Experience, was Google's experimental test of AI-generated answers in search, available to users who opted in through Search Labs. AI Overviews replaced SGE when Google rolled the feature out to all US users in May 2024. Many people still use SGE as an older name for the same feature.
